COREG CR is a once-a-day heart medication that is part of a class of drugs known as beta-blockers. COREG CR treats people who have or had one or more of the following: high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, heart failure, and/or a heart attack that reduced how well the heart pumps.

What Is a Beta-blocker?

Beta-blockers are often used in the treatment of certain health problems. If you have one of these problems, your heart must work harder than normal to pump blood to your body. This increases the already-existing strain on your heart. They may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Beta-blockers work by blocking a hormone in your body that can raise your blood pressure and heart rate. By reducing these effects, beta-blockers bring your blood pressure and heart rate down, which helps to reduce the heart's workload and enables it to not pump as hard.
